Supporting Patient Partners in Peer Review
The Institute of Genetics (IG) views patient partnership as fundamental to impactful research. We are committed to involving patient partners at every step of the research process, including peer review of applications for funding.
Peer review of grant applications is a collaborative process involving several people who review applications, discuss their strengths and weaknesses and agree on funding recommendations. These discussions bring together different forms of expertise, including lived expertise, allowing for a holistic assessment of the proposed research. Through this process, CIHR ensures that funded applications align with the objectives of the funding opportunity and meet high standards of research excellence.
Based on experience with patient partners in peer review, we have developed guidance to help prepare patient partners for this process. These resources were co-developed with patient partners working with IG, colleagues at the Brain-Heart Interconnectome, and patient partners who work with them.
Although these guides are designed primarily for patient partners, they may also be helpful to anyone who is new to peer review.
