Message from Mary Jung, INMD Scientific Director
January 2026
Beginning January 1, 2026, the CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) will be located at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus, in the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation and their peoples. I am honoured to begin my role as Scientific Director for INMD, and I approach this role with a deep sense of responsibility and enthusiasm.
I would like to start by thanking Dr. Norm Rosenblum for his leadership and vision over the past 8 years. Under his leadership, INMD has built on successful national and international partnerships, supported capacity building to foster interdisciplinary and intersectoral research through establishing health research training platforms, and successfully developed and implemented the 100 Years of Insulin: Accelerating Canadian Discoveries to Defeat Diabetes research initiative.
Dr. Rosenblum, the INMD team, the INMD Advisory Board, and I have been working diligently to ensure a smooth transition of the Institute. Top priorities for me over the next 6 months will be to ensure stability and continuity over the transition period, and to renew and establish relationships with other CIHR Institutes and health research partners, and to begin developing a new INMD Research Priority Plan to replace the existing INMD Strategic Plan. In all of this work, I will look forward to receiving advice and guidance from the Institute Advisory Board, and will be engaging with our research communities and partners.
It is a privilege to serve the INMD research communities, and I look forward to interacting with you at upcoming events and meetings to hear and learn from your perspectives, especially as we begin to develop the new INMD Research Priority Plan.
Wishing you good health for the new year!
Mary
