Uniting to Respond to Alzheimer's Challenges
Message from Dr. Jane Rylett
Every three seconds, someone in the world develops dementia. In Canada, nearly 750,000 people are living with this disease. The Alzheimer Society of Canada estimates that by 2030, there will be 187,000 new cases of dementia each year—that's 512 new diagnoses every day, or 21 every hour. Whether directly or indirectly, the lives of every Canadian will be impacted by this disease.
Since 2023, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Brain Health and Cognitive Impairment in Aging (BHCIA) Research Initiative led by the CIHR Institute of Aging, has delivered on the research and innovation pillar of Canada's national dementia strategy (NDS). This initiative supports a wide range of research focused on dementia - from healthy brain aging and cognitive impairment, to improving care for people with dementia and support for their caregivers. The BHCIA research initiative represents a total investment of $79M from the Government of Canada and partners for 16 strategic funding programs that are aligned with the NDS.
A key component of this initiative is the Dementia Research and Innovation Funders Alliance (the Alliance), established to foster collaboration among funders and other partners working in dementia research and innovation across Canada. Following its launch in November 2023, the Alliance published a look-ahead report outlining key areas for future work and clear deliverables to make a meaningful impact in the dementia research ecosystem. With 25 member organizations, the Alliance is working to align research priorities and develop solutions that address the complex challenges of dementia.
The Alliance is aiming to create new opportunities for synergy, ensuring that every dollar invested has maximum impact contributing to better prevention strategies, earlier detection new treatments, and improved quality of life for Canadians living with dementia and their caregivers. Together, we can make a difference.
The Alliance will hold its second annual meeting on November 6, 2024, in Montreal, where key members and stakeholders will review progress, share insights, and plan for the future. Stay tuned for exciting updates from this dedicated group by visiting the Alliance's website.
