Biography

Dr. Mutwiri is an experienced academic leader, public health and vaccine researcher at the University of Saskatchewan (USask). He currently serves as Executive Director and Professor in the School of Public Health.

His career combines institutional leadership with broader professional and community engagement. At USask, he has participated in senior governance bodies including the Senior Leadership Forum, Deans' Council, and the Health Sciences Deans Committee, now the Joint Governance Council of Academic Health Sciences. He currently serves on the President's Strategic Synthesis Committee, which is developing the university's UPlan 2035 strategic plan. Beyond the university, he has been president of the American Association of Veterinary Immunologists, founding president of AFRI-CAN Investors, Inc., and is a certified LEADS Global facilitator. He also founded Black History Month at USask in 2022.

Dr. Mutwiri's academic training spans three countries: a veterinary medicine degree from the University of Nairobi, a PhD from the University of Guelph, and postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Diego. This international background is reflected in his research relationships across Canada, the United States, China, Kenya, Ethiopia and Rwanda.

As a researcher, he has produced more than 190 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and conference abstracts. The research in which he has participated as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or collaborator has attracted over $18 million in funding. His research focuses on vaccine research, development, policy and public health. He also contributes to scholarly publishing as a member of the editorial board of the journal Vaccines.
